Intro to Joining BRSYSA: For Girls

In Fall and Spring, teams typically have 2 practices per week and a game on Friday (evening), Saturday, or Sunday.  In Summer, teams participate in Friday–Sunday tournaments in which they play multiple games per day.

Divisions (by Grade)

NOTE:   Placement now aligns with "school year" and grade rather than the "calendar year."  See "2024 Age Chart" below.

6U Division  ("Pee Wee"):  Pre-K, K, 1st

  • Designed to teach girls the basics of softball.
  • We honor requests to play with specific coaches and buddies (if possible).
  • Team rosters of 6–8 players.
  • Teams practice 1–2 days per week, depending on coach/player preferences and availability.
  • Practice days & times will be determined by the coach(es), based largely on which days/times work best for the majority of families.  (For example, Tuesday/Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 or Monday/Wednesday from 5:00–6:00.)
  • Games are usually on Saturdays, but an occasional Sunday is possible.
  • The time limit for games is 60 minutes.
  • Every inning, each team bats through its full roster.
  • Coach pitch:  4 pitches, then hit off tee.
  • Runners may advance only one base on balls hit off tee.
  • Runners may advance only one base when balls are hit off a live pitch, except for balls hit to the outfield.  This becomes a coaching decision.
  • Runners cannot advance on balls overthrown.
  • If a player grounds out, pops out, gets tagged out, or hits into a force out, the player is officially "out" and cannot remain on base.
  • We do not keep scores or standings in 6U.

BRSYSA Softball Seasons

What's better than playing softball?  Having fun playing softball!

A "year" in BRSYSA softball consists of three (3) seasons of consistent progression:   Fall, Spring, and Summer.   Due to rain, there is no softball in Winter.

In terms of on-field drills, our coaches approach the Fall, Spring, and Summer seasons in such a way that players naturally progress and improve from Fall to Spring and from Spring to Summer.

What does not vary is our steadfast commitment to providing a positive, constructive, fun, and developmentally appropriate environment through which all kids grow, both as individuals and teammates.  Please check the "Parents & Coaches" section for more information on our approach, including our partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance.

In Fall and Spring, BRSYSA forms multiple recreational softball teams in each age bracket (8U / 10U / 12U) to compete in the Peninsula Softball League (PSL).  The PSL consists of girls' softball teams from Belmont, Burlingame, Foster City, Half Moon Bay, Millbrae, Pacifica, Palo Alto, Redwood City, San Bruno, San Carlos, and San Mateo.

In Summer, our "Belmont Blast" teams participate in tournament play in all divisions (except 6U).   Read more below.

Fall Season

autum-fall_medium

"Fall Ball" (a.k.a., Autumn) is a developmental season in which coaches place particular focus on the fundamentals of the sport.   Yes, some players are more experienced and advanced than others, and that's perfectly fine!  Softball players of all ages and skill levels work on basic fielding, throwing, and hitting drills that remain surprisingly similar from 6U through college.  In fact, the best college players in the world—including those on Team USA—still work on their fundamentals at every practice because fundamentals are that important.

Our Fall coaches do their best to ensure that every girl gets a chance to play every position in practices and games.  However, we'll never force or unduly pressure a girl to play any particular position if she's uncomfortable doing so.   We endeavor to instill confidence, but we'll never badger.   No pressure; all fun.  If a girl's not smiling, we're doing something wrong.

Our cooperative coaches do a wonderful job of forming multiple teams that are as equitable, balanced, and fun as possible.  Rest assured that we never lose sight of the fact that the ultimate goal of playing softball is to have fun!   To that end, our coaches and "veteran" players waste no time making first-time players and less confident players feel as welcome and comfortable as possible.

We typically form at least one team in each age division (6U / 8U / 10U / 12U).

BIG NEWS!  In 2023—for the first time in our 30-year history—we launched the inaugural season of Fall 6U "Tee Ball" softball for girls ages 4, 5, and 6!

The Fall season runs from mid-September through mid-November (concluding with playoffs).

Spring Season

spring_medium-yellow-softball_medium

We're always excited to kick off another spring season of softball.  Our league is dedicated to providing a safe and fun environment for girls to learn and develop their softball skills, while also fostering a sense of teamwork and sportsmanship.

The spring season typically runs from March through May, with games played on weekends and occasional weeknights.  Our league is open to players of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced players.

Registration for the spring season typically opens in December and closes in late February.  Be sure to register early to secure your spot on a team!  We offer a variety of divisions based on age and skill level, so players will be placed on a team that is appropriately matched to their abilities.

In addition to regular season games, we also offer a playoff tournament at the end of the season to determine the league champions.  This is a great opportunity for players to showcase their skills and compete against other cities/teams in the league.

We also offer a variety of clinics and training opportunities throughout the season to help players improve their skills and build confidence on the field.  Our coaches are dedicated volunteers who are passionate about the game and committed to helping each player reach her full potential.

At Belmont Redwood Shores Youth Softball Association, we believe that softball is more than just a game—it's an opportunity for girls to build friendships, develop leadership skills, and gain confidence both on and off the field.  We are committed to providing a positive and encouraging environment where every girl can thrive.

Summer Season

summer_medium

For our competitive "Belmont Blast" program each summer, we typically form a "recreational" team and an "advanced" team in each age division (8U / 10U / 12U).  We do not offer a 6U program in the summer.

Each team participates in 4 to 6 USA Softball tournaments.  Tournaments are generally 3-day events (scheduled Friday–Sunday), hosted within a roughly 50-mile radius of Belmont.

The summer season runs from mid-May through mid-July, with the potential for additional play into late July if your daughter's team qualifies for the California State Championships in San Diego or—in the case of 12U—the Western Regionals in Oregon.

Intro to Joining BRSYSA: For Parents

Are you a parent with a passion for softball and a desire to make a positive impact on young athletes?  Becoming a parent-coach in BRSYSA can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience.  As a parent-coach, you have the unique opportunity to contribute to the development of young girls both on and off the field.  Let's explore the benefits:

  2. Positive Role Model:  As a parent-coach, you become a role model for not only your child but also for the entire team.  You have the chance to demonstrate the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.  By leading by example, you can positively influence the players' character development.
  3. Building a Supportive Community:  Being involved as a parent-coach helps you connect with other parents who share similar interests and goals.  You become part of a supportive community where you can exchange ideas, collaborate, and build friendships that extend beyond the softball season.
  4. Developing Coaching Skills:  If you're interested in coaching or have a desire to enhance your coaching abilities, being a parent-coach is an excellent opportunity to develop and refine your skills.  BRSYSA provides resources, training, and support to help you become an effective and knowledgeable coach.

  6. Fostering a Love for Sports:  As a parent-coach, you play a vital role in fostering a love for sports and physical activity.  By creating a fun and engaging environment, you can inspire girls to stay active, develop a life-long passion for softball, and embrace a healthy lifestyle.
  7. Personal Growth:  Coaching is not only about teaching others; it's also an opportunity for personal growth.  As a parent-coach, you'll enhance your communication skills, leadership abilities, problem-solving capabilities, and decision-making skills.  These qualities are not only valuable in coaching but also transferable to various aspects of your personal and professional life.
  8. Contributing to the Community:  By volunteering as a parent-coach, you become an integral part of the Belmont Redwood Shores community.  Your efforts help create a positive and supportive environment for young girls to thrive, promoting the overall well-being of the community as a whole.

Be a part of something meaningful and join us as a parent-coach in BRSYSA.  Together, let's empower young athletes, build character, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
